What do you think of Mayor Ron Dellums' decision to fire City Administrator Deborah Edgerly?

From my prospective, Ms. I don't want to seem bias should have been gone years ago.  I worked as a contract employee for the City of Oakland for eight years and in those eight years I applied for, passed tests with high scores; even ranked in the top three and ten from interviews but was always passed over because of friends, family and favortism within the City.  When I along with prior supervisors with my last year with the City in 2005 bought it to her attention, ( at that time she was the head of the department I had been working in ) she stated she couldn't get involved  beacause she didn't want to seem bias.  But yet she was allowing others to hire family members, friends, and favorites that was on the bottom of the hiring list.  But hell, she was doing the same thing !  She's even gone to the bat to keep favorites from being fired when they should have been.  She sure don't seem bias when it comes to getting her family, family friends and favorites employeed.  So from me, good riddings!!

The threat of a lawsuit has been overplayed by Mrs Edgerly. She has so many skeletons in the closet that a lawsuit by her would actually help the City make much of it public. Furthermore, in a lawsuit, her remaining cronies will likely face additional scrutiny and public exposure as well. Much as they have publicly supported her, they want her to just go away, too. That way the spotlight of public scrutiny will dim and they can return to living large by using the City as their own private cookie jar. That loud noise you hear coming from City Hall is the sound of the shredder working overtime to cover up tracks, but not all of them are Edgerly's.

A couple days have passed since the threat of lawsuit, and I can't find anything about the legal theory she hopes to raise.  I've heard only two generalizations from Weinberg:  Edgerly's firing was "unlawful," and that her "constitutional rights" were violated.  Constitutional rights?  I can't wait to hear it.  Maybe on Monday we'll hear more about Edgerly's specific legal theories, or maybe we'll just hear more legalese for "we've got nothin'."

Yeah, she should be fired.  You a city administrator with a lot of power and you misuse it and abuse it you do not need to be in charge of anything. And let alone nepotism, favortism doesn't set well with people who are trying to make a honest living and are morally good and you as an administrator overlooks good qualified people to get hoodrats and thugs hired no wonder our city is so full of crime, look who they got half way running it.  It starts at the top and if she's done or has been doing what being claimed, yes she should be FIRED. Yes Ron Dellums made the right decision, by removing her.  Now hopefully the next person in charge with be welcomed to help the city in a better way.

Alright now what happens if her nephew gets found not guilty? The city will owe her millions!!! For wrongful termination defamation of character to mention a couple you know he pleaded not guilty.?! From my understanding they dont have any evidence or weapon. If so the public jumped the gun.

OAKLAND POLICE ARE HUMAN THEY MAKE MISTAKES BUT ALMOST ALL THE PEOPLE BEING DONE WRONG DONT HAVE SOMEONE TO CALL TO BRING THIS SORT OF ATTENTION!!! YOU GUYS ACT AS IF OPD HAS AN IMPECABLE TRACK RECORD LETS SEE HOW IT TURNS OUT THEN COMMENT!

Even if the OPD made a mistake, the fact that she INTERFERED IN AN INVESTIGATION is still a sound reason for firing her. Do we really want people running the city who hire their relatives, warn criminals that they are under investigation, etc., etc? Like, do we just love crime so much that we want to encourage it?

Dellums doesn't need a reason to fire an at-will employee. Wrongful termination doesn't apply. As for defamation, I haven't heard Dellums announce that Edgerly committed any wrongdoing. Have you? Even if he did, I'm sure he didn't maliciously make false statements about her. A verdict of not guilty for Edgerly's nephew means that the prosecution failed to make its case, not that any of the allegations were false.

Indeed, Edgerly should be fired.  Oakland deserves much, much better then Edgerly provided.  NOW, would you all agree that Mayor Ron Dellums should be FIRED too.  Bring in a mayor who will be present and accounted for as opposed to Mr. Dellums far and wide traveling.   Oakland requires a mayor who provides consistent and persistent leadership on the job and who responds to the crisis prone city immediately and effectively.  We need substance in our leader, not the kind of posturing stylishness we get from the chauffeur driven mayor dressed to the 9s  but not to work.  Get to work Mr. Mayor, our citizens are being killed on a daily basis while you delay, fail to act, or travel.  Show us you are working, be seen, heard, understood.  The Edgerly situation could have been prevented had you provided some amount of leadership and effective oversight to the city.  Hit the streets Mr. Mayor.  Help the public reframe the value of coming forward to solve these daily murderous crimes.  No one blames you for all the problems but could you help with the cultural war that puts murder forward as the first alternative to conflict.  Can you address the "respect" value whereby perceived disrespect = death, where a mere side look can cause someone to kill,  where criminal behavior is respected but doing good refers to time off for good behavior.  Ours is a criminal culture run amok and their are thousands of ways that you as the Mayor can help.  We beg you.  Leadership is imperative NOW.  Or get fired and or resign.

I don't know what goes on in city hall, but I do believe in due process. Ms Edgerly was denied a chance to vindicate herself. It seems that her dilemma was exacerbated by and used by those in the media who seek opportunities to put Mayor Dellums in the hot seat. I applaud his level headed handling of the situation, but don't agree that she should have been fired based on allegations of misconduct.

I'm glad to see that the vast majority of those resonding support Edgerly's firing, whether after some thought and consideration by the Mayor, or whether he took a little long, because I think it's obvious to most what kind of unethical person she is.  As for those who are decrying lack of due process,  she's an at-will employee who stated she was retiring; the Mayor never cast a judgement of guilt, rather it seems he came to the conclusion that there was no way she could continue to do her job - because she refused relinquish oversight of the Police and she lost the confidence of her staff, her elected City Council, City Attorney &  City Auditor.  That's his call. Now, let's reflect on the recent past.  Do you remember the Fire Fighter recruitment?  People came from everywhere to fairly compete, and when it became apparent the family & friends would perhaps not make it, Edgerly & Co changed the rules.  Pay attention to who is in that first Fire Academy class...look for Edgerly relatives, her assistant's Cheryl Thompson's family & friends, etc. And what about the city's finances?  Do you remember the whistle-blower lawsuit currently underway by the City's former Controller, LaRae Brown?  It was in the newspapers that she tried to tell the truth about the City's finances, and it got her fired.  Another who tried to tell the truth (think Vallejo) was the former Budget Director, James Smith, who was unceremoniously fired after one year.  Please note that these two came from outside the City, and they have been replaced with in-house staff selected by Edgerly. So, you see, just the tip of the iceberg.  Hopefully the Mayor, City Council, City Auditor or City Attorney (all elected) will have the courage to dig deeper and root out the corruption in City Hall.

How many of you voted not once, but twice for your former Mayor, now California Attorney General Jerry Brown? How many voted just recently, as well as before, for your Council President De la Fuente? Forget the impropriety of hiring relatives; what about public funds siphoned off as subsidies going to your Forest City friends (to the tune of $60million)? What about Oak St. to Ninth, sold to your friends for a fraction of its value? What about the Tidewater (De la Fuente) for your cronies? Ahh yes, where were the silent sheep then, as all of this corruption was passed off as good public policy? Where were these ethical sentiments then? Hey: if the allegations against Edgerly, impairs the ability of the people to have confidence in City government, as Council member Kernigan said, then what about the original recipient of an FBI investigation...............Mr. De la Fuente? Oh wait a minute; Don Perata? How many of you clamoured for their recall or resignation? Cloud of confidence over our public institutions you say? I know. Speak in hushed tones silent sheep, as you have already voted your ethics. For those of you, who are intolerant of corruption whether from Edgerly, Brown, De la Fuente, Russo or whoever; I share that disdain with you. For the others: It would be better respected if this intolerance for corruption was leveled and applied across the board.

I gagged and supported Nadel.  DeLaFuente and Perata I have been down on for years. I still hope Perata ends up in the slammer.

I have long marvelled at how many people have suddenly awakened from intellectual slumber with the firing of Ms. Edgerly. Maybe they'll now get concerned about the rest of the pack of weasels running the city, the statehouse, and on up the chain? Let's talk about Ms. Pelosi's ability to evade the law regarding her golf course down by the Coyote Valley; how about Ms. Feinstein's wondrous vote to create a few national parks and monuments that coincidentally contained mining resources that provided alternatives to her husband's holdings? Or how about Ms. Pelosi, who dances with the union members demanding a living wage for hotel employees while being a part owner of a large, very non-union wine country resort? The list goes on and on - and the people, instead of realizing they're being sheared and fleeced like a bunch of stupid sheep seem to think that those who steal from them are somehow smart and clever instead of simply being well dressed thugs.
