Hill is a career backup. He is here in case Alex gets hurt. If Alex does not make it with the 49ers Then Nolan is gone. Nolan better hope that Martz can get Smith going if not then like I said before Nolan's job is gone. Alex needs to be named the starter if he sucks or gets hurt then Hill can go in. If Alex doesn't succeed this year we need to look for a new long term QB Hill will never be it.

The good thing is that Alex still has plenty of support. Every poll from the 49ers page to the webzone to every other 49ers page I have seen overwhelmingly support Smith. I have never seen a poll where fans did not want Smith over Hill by a huge amount and where fans did not think Alex was our long term QB. It may not happen but the fans not wanting Smith to start are in the huge minority it would appear.

It's really too bad that Smith hasn't amounted to much since he joined the Niners, but, maybe, just maybe, he might do better with Martz. I agree that Hill played the best out of all the niner QBs last season, and Weinke even put up decent numbers in his one game, but, they just don't seem to be the next big 49ers QB.

I think that we need to look for that one talented QB who's 'waiting in the wings' to be our next Steve Young or Joe Montana. Now, I'm not talking about drafting another big-name college QB and expecting him take over and throw 40 TDs right away (EXAMPLE - Ryan Leaf), I'm talking about a QB who has been in the NFL for only a couple of seasons, has great potential, but, hasn't really gotten the chance to shine as a team leader.

I'm just throwing out some names here, tell me if you think any of them would play at least half decent for the Niners: Chad Pennington (NYJ), Joey Harrington (ATL), David Carr (NYG), Matt Leinart (ARZ).

I know Brett Favre would look pretty good in Red & Gold, but, he already had a long, great career in Green Bay.

From all the polls I have seen I think most 49er fan's feel the same way.  We all want Smith to succeed.  He has the most upside of any of our QB's but hasn't shown much yet.  This is his year. If by the end of the year he hasn't taken a huge step forward then he won't be the 49ers Qb of the future and we need to move on.

I think he will if he can stay healthy but we will have to wait and see.  i think early on we are going to be rusty and we have a brutal first half schedule.  However i think we could finish strong.
