Visiting Friends? VISITING FRIENDS?????? Oh brother, I've heard everything now. There are no people over there worthy of calling friends. I feel sorry for the family but why try and sweet coat this story. There is only one reason anyone this white would be in that area. I don't go over there for any reason. People who live there are not friend worthy. When you make this sound like a routine shooting you take away the sting. We need the sting to raise public outcry. We need this area removed from Alameda. All these people are undesirables. We want them out. There is no room for thugs in Alameda.

Oh good lord, visiting friends at 2:50 AM and the son of a defense attorney. Come on now, save the ink until you have a story that anyone can believe. I'm with ennyk, trying to soften the blow for the family does nothing to create the true sense of desperation we should all feel about homicides in Alameda, Oakland, SF and so on.

I've read the two comments left so far, and cannot believe how rude you two people are. There are good people that live in that area too, not every person there are gang banging thugs, or drug dealers, some are elderly or disabled, some GOOD, hard working (legal jobs) single Moms. I had family who lived there for several years, thankfully, they bought a home elsewhere thanks to a program that helped them save money to do so.
This is a heartbreaking situation, and yes, Troy probably did have friends there, they may, or may not have been good, and what happened no matter what is tragic. This is a young man raised by good parents, a Mom who is a former nun, a Dad who is not only an attorney, but sometimes sits in as judge in Alameda. We cannot begin to speculate what happened, or why it happened, and it doesn't seem to be sugar coated reporting. The police are clearly saying that it was NOT a random shooting.
It's easy to stand back and judge others when it's not a member of your family dead. You don't know everything your kids do (if you have any) and they might just hang out down that way too.
My heart goes out to the Lancaster family, I hope the person or people responsible are caught and justice is served.

Don't get me wrong friend. I feel very sympathetic for the family of this kid but I still think it is completely out of line to print a LIE. There are no good people over there; there never have been any good people over there and there never will be any good people over there until they bulldoze the entire area. The elderly people that are there are only bad people who grew old and the disabled people are bad people who became disabled. They are all leaches of society and are of no value or importance to the world. Furthermore, their presence there is the ultimate cause of this young man's demise. Go ahead and try to make yourself look good for this family. I think they have much more to worry about than what is on this page. Get Real!

Yes, lets get real, first, I am not your friend. I would not want anyone who had such hatred to be a friend. What part of this article is a lie? The part that states very clearly that the police do NOT believe this was a random crime? Or the part that states he had friends there? Or the part that states his Father is a criminal attorney?
As for your harsh judgement of people who may not be as wealthy as you, think about who is washing your car, doing your dry cleaning, cleaning your home, providing care for your children, cleaning your chimney, mowing your lawn, painting your house. Chances are some of them live in low income housing, they are hard working, tax paying individuals who have much more pride than you can ever muster up.
I guess vietnam vets are leaches of society now, they gave their lives fighting an unjust war, as so many are doing today, and they're leaches of society? You obviously don't have your facts straight ennyk67. It doesn't matter where you live in Alameda, drugs are there from one end of the island to the next. Fernside was where most people scored in high school ... and not kids from the projects either.
Lastly, I do not have to try to make myself look better for the family, or for anyone else. This is a family who lost their child, no matter how you look at it. This is an upstanding family in the community. The parents are good, hardworking people, no matter how YOU want to twist it.

I agree with you. Some people are downright mean-spirited, quick to judge, and have no respect for this young man or his family... A 19 year old kid was murdered. There is a difference between being the victim of a crime, and being the perpetrator of a crime. But apparently some people don't understand the difference.
How the hell do any of you know what he was doing? If you do know, tell it to the cops. I'm sure they would appreciate the info.
How would you feel if it was one of your family and you had to read dumb comments about where he was, and what he was doing? Regardless of what he was doing- did he deserve this fate? I think not...

Deserving has nothing to do with it. When you put yourself in a bad situation, you get a bad result. On the bright side, he won't be doing that again. I'm not trying to be mean spirited but I face reality and that reality is, those people in that area (housing project) are pure trash and anyone who associates with them must be pure trash as well. In this society You are the company you keep.

I love Alameda. It is the best city in the Bay Area but that one side of the island is just nasty. We really should gather a mob with flame throwers and go burn everything and everyone to the ground. I hate Drugs, I hate killers and I hate non productive parasites like the thugs that go around selling their poison and robbing people.

The police officer who murdered his wife, spray painted her car, and left her abandoned in East Oakland in an attempt to frame people who lived there, lived on Bay Farm Island. That happened a few years ago. Oh, excuse me you wouldn't know anything about that since you were obviously born yesterday.

I grew up in Oakland, and Alameda. When we moved to Alameda I was told to stay away from the west side. Of course, I was curious so I went there. I found a lot of drunken sailors, and their familes, many of them poor. . That didn't give me the right to automatically hate them, or avoid them as my family tried to teach me to do. Life is too short not to embrace everyone at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I grew up in Alameda and I cant believe what Iam reading here! What ever happened to "Love your neighbor"? The bible teaches us to love the sinner but to hate the sin! No one knows what that boy was doing but him and God! And who is anyone to judge him and the company he kept?? The bible also says not to judge that you will be judged the way you judge people....so I would be careful! What is wrong with the world today? I think it is because people have the attitude as the ones in the comments that Ive read. How can we have a positive world if so many are feeding negitive attitudes! Iam done!

i grew up on the west end of Alameda in the B.V.'s 400 block of buena vista ave. back in the 1990's and early 2000's i lived in bldg 435 i saw a lot there growing up and to give you the honest truth there really isn't a lot of bad people on the west end its usually one,two or at maybe three small groups with something to prove that are causing the problems, trust me i used to be one of them until i realized that there is much more to life than were u live. Everyone else are poor and middle class families just trying to raise they're children in a safer place than cities like Richmond or Oakland we're crime is an epidemic. Oakland was the 4th most dangerous City in the country in 2008 while richmond was number 9 but richmond has the cheapest rent in the bay..... [bleep] in places like hunters point in San Francisco for some people the rent is 50 bucks a month but who wants to raise there kids in the most toxic place in the world, the hunters point navy shipyard. not to mention its home to the most dangerous project housing in the state. the ignorance in the last post are sad. im proud to be from Alameda but reading these last post remind me why i left the most racist city in the bay area. i aint gonna lie Alamedas West end is [bleep] up, what with the pollution from Alameda point (which i hear is now being called Alamurder Point) but, anyone can make it out because i did and i was one of the worst.
