The Raiders are facing a delemma that is as serious as the Oakland Raider Franchise having a heart attack in 2009. Will an angioplasty, a bypass, perhaps stents, resolve the problem? Unless Jamarcus Russell can overcome his mind-set, the possiblity of such an attack could sideline the Raiders for 2009; another lost year. In two posts ago I warned that such an impending possibility could come about and here we are. The question is, which way will Russell go? After reading Kwakami, (SJ Mercury News) I have to agree, there is no greater tact than to place our wishes and support in JR as QB. Given that he will be given every opportunity to be the future of the Raiders regardless of performance; every change possible shoud be taken to give him the opportunity to succeed. Since what JR does is atonomous and self-contained, continued good pass protection is all that can be done on the QB side of the ball. But on the recipient side of the ball there are certain steps that can be taken that might enhance his play. It has aleady been established that Russell and Chaz Schilens had established a confidence, comminication, and chemistry that resulted in a positive outcomes. The absence of Schilens makes it imperative that every tight end, wide receiver, and anyone that can catch a football be allowed to play to give Russell the shot of finding "that receiver" that will change whatever the x-squiggly-p factor is that is holding him back. He has shown flashes of success, it has to be bottled by the coaching staff. Every team is going to come at the Raiders with eight in the box to force the passing game. Eight in the defensive box tends to shut down the running game, and unless the Wildcat formation has been mastered, then check-down passing has to turn that formation to an advantage. Defenses are going to go to double coverage on Zack Miller. It goes back to J Russell. Coaching should use J. Walker, Brandon Myers, Tony Stewart, Todd Watkins, Louis Murphy, JL Higgens, Heyward Bey, Louis Rankin, Bush and McFadden. Give him receivers, let JR's performance be the judge of who he wants to throw to. Allow JR to surprise the advasary team and the NFL in general. If he can overcome the x-squiggly-p factor, the Raiders can go all the WAY. Coaching and what coaching does falls on them as much as it does on JR....
