2005 : Maceo Smith, 30, of Berkeley : Suspected of Oakland Gang Involvement, Double Homicide

2008 : Maceo Smith, 33, of Berkeley : Victim

Are you saying this isn't the same guy? Who's really trying to misinform the public; you or me?

Should I post his rap sheet here too? I will if you insist.

If you really knew the guy, and he was a friend or family member, then I am truly sorry for your loss, but this is discussion board. We talk about things that affect everybody. Here's a link for those who want to post condolences: http://www.legacy.com/insidebayarea/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&Pers...

Was he involved in a violent lifestyle that affects a society in dangerous ways? You can tell us that he was a good father and all, but what kind of effect did he have in his community? Had he turned his life around and given back to the community? Did he still have one foot in the other lifestyle?; but also tell the truth of his past.

This time, I challange you to present yourself without the foul mouthed ignorance in this public forum.

DO YOU KNOW WITH OUT A CRIMINAL HISTORY THATS THE PLAN. HE WAS DOING GREAT IN THE COMMUNITY TAKING GUYS OFF OF THE CORNERS TO GO PLAY BALL! THAT WAS NOT EVEN HIS PROBLEM THAT HAD HIM THERE AT THAT TIME. AND YOU MENTION RAP SHEET IF THAT WAS THE TYPE OF GUY HE WAS WHY DID'NT HE TAKE A GUN WITH HIM TO A PROBLEM? JUST BECAUSE HE LOOKS THAT WAY ON PAPER DOES NOT MEAN THAT IS THE TYPE OF PERSON HE WAS! HAVE YOU EVER SPOKE TO MACEO? DO YOU KNOW THE KIND OF PERSON HE REALLY WAS? NOT WHATS ON PAPER BECAUSE I KNOW PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR NOTHING!! HAD A COUSIN AND A FRIEND SERVE 15 YEARS ON A 25 TO LIFE SENTENCE FOR A CRIME THEY WERE'NT EVEN PRESENT WHEN IT OCCURED AND SOMEONE STEPED UP AND ADMITTED TO IT ON T.V 15 YEARS EARLIER? SO ASSANATING HIS CHARACTER ABOUT A RAP SHEET GAINS YOU NO GROUND!

I cannot put words in others "mouths"...but it appears that a person is saying this is perhaps "Karma" that took the life of Maceo Smith. From the readings of this young man, who was a city employee, community leader and most of all a father of three young son's. In my opinion I do believe in people being granted second chances, for things that once blemished their past. Why must people go backward's and throw salt into a opened wound, the death of this young man, who people have came to love, respected and trusted?

May he rest in peace. But be honest, he had way more than "blemished" his own past.

On the personal side, like the other guy said, I didn't personally know him and the same applies to you, so I don’t think you can give him sainthood, as you’re doing, either.

A serious news story though should tell the facts that they know as they matter to the general public. Was he involved in Oakland gangs, did he hurt a lot of people either directly or indirectly by people being scared in their own communities by gang violence? If it doesn't get reported then it disrespects the greater number of victims in society.

Sure, tell how he got out of it and followed a better path, but too many people have been seriously hurt to ignore the past. Don't disrespect the greater number of victims.

Also, a separate issue, why would his own family member leave him behind, bleeding to death, and drive himself to the hospital?

Mnm is right. Trouble, I stand by my condolences to you because I know this is a sad loss. With that said, Maceo Smith was no angel and certainly no stranger to the criminal justice system. I am not convinced that his job with the City of Oakland Parks and Recs is evidence that he had changed his criminal lifestyle. Oakland is renowned for hiring criminals - thank you Deborah Edgerley! As for Smith's supervisor's comment that if we were all judged based upon our past none of us would have a chance. I beg to differ! Spoken like a guy with a lot of felony arrests that were bumped down to misdemeanors. Give me a break! If your circle of friends and employees have all committed criminal acts, I guess that would be how you think. Thank goodness he is in a supervisory position. I can only imagine what is acceptable work in his view, he probably runs a tight ship(?). I don't know about karma, but Oakland karma yes. Let us try to imagine the lives Smith negatively impacted with his prior career of carrying a gun and selling drugs. Dope fiends stealing from their families, neighborhoods run down, children watching the drugs sales and thinking it is "cool", shooting victims and the list goes on. That is a lot of bad karma, and working part-time for Parks & Rec and loving your children may not have been enough. And, by the way, why is it that the Trib always mentions what a dedicated mother, father, etc. victims are? News flash - that is not a virtue, it is expected of you if you have children! The Trib truly does reflect the community it serves - twisted values, excuses rather than facts, simplistic beliefs. Congratulations to the Trib for feeding into the sickness that is Oakland. Read the SFGate article on this shooting, it is more realistic.
