Unfortunately, cheeseburgers, veggieburgers and fish nuggets are all cooked in cheap grease or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. They really are poor food for growing kids. I totally support better food for Oakland youth. The mac and cheese with cokes and potato chips is not food. It's just slow poison to give the kids diabetes and make them fat.

I'm sure the school lunches are lacking in nutrition, but our neighborhood schools have another problem.  The minute the school day ends the street vendors park outside selling ice cream, potato chips and assorted junk food.  The kids eat the garbage they sell, spoil their dinner and leave the wrappers, sacks and garbage all over the neighborhood as they walk home.

I don't know how to stop junk food vendors from parking in public areas, but it's really adding pounds and potential health problems to the kids in East Oakland.

So, these kids have money to throw away on junk food after school but can't afford to pay for a nutritious lunch during school?  THAT is the REAL problem.  Hey, it's free (or nearly free) - and you get what you pay for.

It is refreshing to see steps being made to bring more healthful food options, like the Farmer's market, to the school lunch program. On a side note, I do think it is unfair to single out high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a culprit to the problem at hand regarding the eating habits of our youth. HFCS is no different than other sugars being consumed, containing the same amount of calories per gram and even sharing a similar chemical makeup as table sugar and honey. Excessive calories, from whatever source, leads to weight gain as well as a plethora of other health issues facing American's today. Keep the focus on bringing more nutritionally dense and lower calorie options to the school lunch program while educating on the importance of portion control and an active lifestyle.

Healthy regards,

Kim Mueller, MS, RD
