Are the Niners in the playoffs? 49ers fans are riveted to all the drama unfolding late in this dismal season.
Here's the abridged version of what's happening: Mike Nolan wants Alex Smith to come out and play. Smith wants Nolan to stop picking on him in front of people. Smith is going to leave and have surgery -- and it's probably a good time because nobody likes him.
Yep, that sounds about right.
In a scrimmage, the 49ers couldn't beat Cal -- nor Stanford or De La Salle -- so instead they started their own fight club.
Smith told reporters at insidebayarea.com that Nolan ruined Smith's reputation in the locker room. According to Smith, Nolan told the team "some things." Nobody has gone on the record to deny or validate these "things." It's safe for me to assume "things" were said.
I'm sure we've seen the last of Smith in a 49er jersey. The last time I did something similar and let "things" slip out to my friends, my girlfriend left me.
And, I'm not surprised by all the finger-pointing. You can't have a bad season(s) and not have an excuse. Especially if your job is on the line.
In this case, both QB and coach are justifiably paranoid about their stay in San Francisco. For the Yorks, this cat-fighting couldn't come at a better time.
The Yorks need to soon prove that they are savvy and committed football team owners.  It's going to be a lot easier to accomplish both goals by getting rid of Nolan and Smith.
Replacements won't be difficult to find. What can be worse, right? The Yorks might acquire, via draft or trade, a good quarterback this off-season (and there were a few strong QB's in college). And, firing Nolan while under scrutiny isn't a bad thing. It's not like the 49ers fans are going to start hating the Yorks.
More importantly, the rest of the 49ers in the locker room probably can't trust Nolan or Smith. I have to believe that if the Yorks are going to make changes, it's for the greater good.
