Seize the moment, prime minister
By URI SAVIR

All supporters of peace in the Middle East should be satisfied with the outcome of Monday's meeting in Washington.

Prime minister Netanyahu aired constructive and moderate views, but overall he did not surprise anybody. President Obama,

however, expressed a fresh American ideology that will help resolve the conflict in the region.

Israel need not worry: Obama is a friend of Israel who will maintain the ethos of Israeli-American friendship from the two prior

administrations. He is aware of Israel's security needs and will consider them in the peace process.

In terms of his ideology, he stated firmly that the best solutions to conflicts are achieved through steadfast negotiations and that

the use of force is only a last resort.

Second, he understands the Palestinian need for land, and he therefore demands, unequivocally, the total freezing of settlements.

The American president appreciates the opportunity recently created to build a coalition with the Arab countries against Iran and

its allied fundamentalists. I believe that when Obama visits Cairo in early June, he will present his own peace initiative after his

meetings with Mahmoud Abbas and Hosni Mubarak, which will include a two-state solution and a regional peace backed by the

Saudi initiative.

This gradual peace plan will include the following stipulations: peace negotiations with the Palestinians and possibly with Syria;

Palestinian security measures against terror; Palestinian steps to create modern institutions; Israel's freezing of settlements;

Israel's removal of illegal outposts and roadblocks; and economic and security cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian

Authority.

For their part, the Arab countries will take gradual measures to normalize relations with Israel, including promoting tourism to and

from Israel (including flights), and cooperation in economic, social and cultural fields.

It is important Obama understands that all issues are intertwined: the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, the regional peace process

and the effect of pacification in the Middle East on isolating Iran and its allies.

Netanyahu, whose position does not completely coincide with that of Obama, did not succeed in masking his dissidence. However,

he will face a critical crossroads in the next two months. He needs to decide whether to head toward an unprecedented, historic

peace move with the Palestinians and in the region, or to resort to the old ideology promulgated by his friends on the Right side of

the coalition.

We should hope that Netanyahu understands the significant opportunity that a worldly, brilliant American president places in front

of us. We should hope that Netanyahu continues the discussion with Obama and the Arab leaders on a path to peace and security

- a path which ultimately will isolate Iran, and will thwart the existential threat posed by Iran and by Arab fundamentalism.

The writer, who was Israel's chief negotiator of the Oslo accords, is the president of the Peres Center for Peace.

buried this issue with little reporting. I think the NY Times put it on their back pages. Instead of talking about the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict being the key to dissolving political tensions and the threat of nuclear war in the region, the US corporate-sponsored Zionist media discuss the meetings between heads of states as some kind of personal contest.

Of course the media did that.  As it plays well to our culture of Wrestlemania and Monster Truck viewers who have been programmed to view the world as one giant never-ending contest.  Who next will get kicked off the Island, and who surprisingly will be the next American Idol?  These questions and stories actually regularly get  segments on nightly news broadcasts.  This cultural programming encourages people to view complex world events an conditions in a very simplistic manner - Good guys, vs Bad guys, Cowboys and Indians, etc., so that we won't get in the way of policymakers as they exploit resources and expand empire through often brutal suppression of the  "Indians" (who were actually the good guys).

The Fox media latest article is splashed on internet now trying to undermine Obama's efforts.  They also like to work overtime at portraying Israeli support of right winger Netanyhau as monolithic.  Meanwhile, Haaretz daily has published editorials supporting Obama's peace process.  They fail to mention that Netanyahu squeaked in by only a few votes and was forced to form a coalition government which the sellout Labor party joined.

P.S.  Be careful of those who plant viruses on our threads in an attempt to stifle democracy and dissent.  These are the brownshirts on this forum who claim they are "educated".  They are about as educated and politically enlightened as Hitler.

While Netanyahu dismantles a camper-trailer Jewish settlement ( not much more than a stage prop that has been knocked down before when Israel needed a photo-op) he continues to authorize new settlement building (entire new communities and apartment complexes in the West Bank) and more bulldozing of Palestinian homes.  Sharon's plan is still fully in place, as Netanyahu has no intention of expansion of Greater Israel.  Once Leaders are elected voters in Israel, though much more enlightened than voters here, have little or no control over this policy, and I just see more stalling and more unacceptable Israeli proposals as Palestinians lose more and more land.  Our Congress needs to quit funding Israel and hold them accountable to the Arms Export Control Act but those in Congress who aren't bought by AIPAC are, like most US citizens, willfully ignorant of the truth about Israel.  I doubt that much will change as long as ignorance here prevails.  Our media is compromised, so there is a slow learning curve.

The fact that North Korea tested a nuclear warhead underground.  I do agree that people in this country are not as informed as they should be..........  I thought that might have changed after 911.  But of course that was so 15 minutes ago until a muslim decides to fly a freaking plane into their house or one of their family members die as a result of a terrorist attack.  The media isnt covering this as they should be.  To busy being viceral in their reporting anymore.  You can forget anything about fair and balance reporting anymore.

Now let's see what Hamas and a few right wing nuts in Israel can do to f**k it all up.

"We should hope that Netanyahu understands the significant opportunity that a worldly, brilliant American president places in front of us."

The writer's mouth is obviously watering for Obama c**k.

What do the PLO and Hamas have to say about all this, I wonder.

Your comments are usually inane, but not profane too.

Congratulations!  You've reached a new low.  Sexist, ageist, disrespectful of wife, and crude too.  I feel sorry for your kids that they have such a role model for a father.

"I feel sorry for your kids that they have such a role model for a father."

That was uncalled for. I never remarked about your wilting ovaries...

But since you mentioned it;

I'll have you know that my 6 year old tested in the top 3%. He's smarter than all of us. I also started teaching him how to wrestle and kickbox when he was five. He'll start learning how to shoot when he's eight, just like I did. So when he reaches adulthood, he will be able to wear you out intellectually, and deal with you by other means should you be stupid enough to say something offensive to him.

He'll have brains AND balls, the way an American male SHOULD be.

Just like Dad. (But he'll be much better looking, mama's genes made sure of that)

My Daughter is just as clever, I spoil her so no other limp d**k can ever measure up to daddy.

And wifey is better taken care of than you ever will be.

I enjoy hearing you boast and in making foolish assumptions about people you have never met.  It's very revealing of your character and your limitations. And, your messed up values.  Unfortunately, you will probably bequeath those to your kids too.

If you're kid is as smart as you claim he probably sees through you already! LOL!

But can she read?  She is quick to assume those who disagree are stupid.  She makes foolish assumptions about people she has never met.  But at least her character and limitations are well understood.  Go, Firefox, Go!  Pound your keyboard as if it doesn't matter.

Serving to enhance profits for corporatists and arms dealers is not necessarily service to one's country.  For example, those US military personnel who served in several wars in Central and South America did nothing but spill innocent's blood to quell discontent of people whose land and labor was exploited by US and right wing oligarchs'  business interests.  US troops have also been repeatedly used to destabalize elected governments, impose dictatorial regimes and impose military huntas.  This activity is not "Service to Country", and in most cases is actually detrimental, as blowback from these actions loses allies.  Educating people to these kinds of wrongs is more of a service than blindly following unrighteous and illegal orders while wearing a uniform.  Do you commend Nazi death chamber guards for their "sacrifice" to country?

GIVE ME A MOTHER FREAKING BREAK ALREADY...............  FOR CHRIST SAKES.  ARE YOU FOR REAL?  And are you refering to Oliver North?  [bleep], you cant even stand in the same room as Ole Olie North.  That man and those who have served in defending this country have more integrity than your [bleep] will ever learn to shake a stick at.  You see wiserman..............  When it really hits the fan, there are going to be three types of people.  Those who will die running, those who will die on their knees, and those who will die fighting.  Something tells me that your not going to be the one who perishes fighting..................

Ollie violated all principles of a democratic republic when he and others circumvented our elected representative's ruling by continuing to fund and support the ant-Sandinista Contras(by the way, Daniel Ortega was fairly ELECTED as the people of Nicaragua's President - Just as Hamas leaders were fairly ELECTED by the people of Palestine).  You are one clueless f*** if you think that circumventing democracy is patriotic.  You are also clueless about anything I've done in a fight, but I'm still here, pal.   Why are you sitting here on your butt, soldier?  Our brothers in Afghanistan could use your idiotic [bleep] in a firefight.  Talk is cheap, and you sound like just the guy that's needed elsewhere.

The core?  Try Corps, as in Marine Corps.  So what?!  That little stint should get you no special status, as our culture is made of various professions and vocations, including warriors.  Many young people voluntarily enlist in the armed services for a variety of reasons, oftentimes not noble - escaping a pregnant girlfriend, escaping traffic court or bad home situations and unemployment.  Even those who nobly enlist to serve a higher purpose than self do so out of ignorance of how our system works.  All corporatists need do is wrap a flag around capitalism,  sing 'God Bless America" to the naive masses and promote Claude Van Damme movies and kids (not THEIR kids!) line up for the slaughterhouse of war.

He'll have brains AND balls, ....and hopefully wisdom that usually is gained too late.  He'll need help with that.  There is a place for violence against truly evil people.  But evil comes in many guises and we often find ourselves on the wrong side of justice.

Hi Wiserman from the outdocks, I went to a private school in high school founded by a military commander with an ex-marine for my history teacher. Two of my classmates father was an admiral who lived in military housing not too far from me. Nowheres was the kind of crude, racist, sexist and disrespectful and rightwing kind of of Rush Limbaugh attitudes displayed as have been displayed in this forum. I've concluded it's a total waste of time responding to those who feast and take lessons from the Limbaughs and Coulters of this country. These people represent a deep tradition of anti-intellectual in our country. I've just finished reading a really good book by Sarahy Parestsky that characterizes this mentality. It is a fiction novel by a great author that is an answer to "What's the matter with Kansas" by a woman who lived in and grew up in Kansas and understands the mindset first hand. It's no mistake that this same mindset of hatred and contempt took the life of a doctor who administered legal abortions to women in Kansas for over 30 years just the other day. Many posters on this forum through their hatred, backwardness and class resentment have no different mindset then the murderer who murdrered the abortionist. In fact, they no more believe in democracy than they beleive in patriotism. They are nothing but tin-pot Hitlers and brownshirts who would murder all dissenters if given the opportunity and hate any and all dissenters to the status quo which they side with being as corrupt as the status quo themselves. Let them march off to Afghanistan and around the world inflaming the people whose countries they are illegally and immorally occupying and whom they are murdering and destroying. Because in the end, the windmills of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine. Cheers, Firefox

And you'll be right here, doing nothing.

It would be one thing if you had any form of public service whatsoever, like the peace corps or something. But merely having a left wing ideology and an opinion is as useful to the world as a mob of retarded quadriplegics.

Enjoy your irrelevance.

SJ, "irrelevance", is the best things that ever happened to me!  Now I can finally do the things I truly enjoyed and wanted to my whole entire life.  Saw a Colorado elk a nd a black bear within 5 minutes last week.  Had around a minute of film on black bear whom i had to literally shush away.  Took 2 photos of some most unusual insects which i'm going to contact UC Davis about identifying.

I'm having the time of my life!

Thanks for your best wishes.  Irrelevance, i luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv it!

Willful ignorance is exploited by powerseekers, warmongers and profiteers.  We've evolved not one iota since feudal lords pillaged and plundered with armies of idiots.  You are definuitely not irrelevant, as I've gained insight from some of what you've said here.  Keep in touch, Firefox....Dave

Dave, these people are back in feudalism but worse. These have facistic mentalities that go beyond feudal barbarism bred and incubated by a country evolving towards facism.

I pay no attention to what ignorant childish cretins are who are being manipulated by powers much stronger and secretive, maniuplative and immoral than they realize.  But the truth is that capitalism has corrupted many Americans too.  And they will eventually pay the price for their worship and obeiance to American corporations.  That day is not too far off as the lands, rivers and oceans become increasingly polluted.  those who do not pay attention to the human toxic load and think that humans can survive where other speciies or human beings die off will eventually become poisoned themselves as US corporations that practiced immoral policies for 3rd world countries increasingly begin to practice these policies at home.

The end will come in way in my humble opinion that Karl Marx never dreamed of possibly nor antiicapted.  And that is with despoilization and contamination of the environment.

Here is a case in point.  I just removed myself from putting in an offer on a house where the owner has no intention of removing an oil tank that could be contaminating the land beneath her house and that of her neigbhors.  yes, I've discovered the dirty, dangerous toxic secret about the northwest that puts the big lie to the idea of Oregon and Washington and even Eurka of being any kind of "green areas".

Because all this underground leaking oil from these tanks which I'm seeing being removed right and left around me are putting into the ground water MT something or other acronym which is a gasoline additive which is now polluting the underground waters and ocean and is showing up in the human body.

Yes, the AMerican people want to be children forever, spoiled, selfish and indifferent.  they don't want to take responsibility for their futures or take any time away from their play or hating sports and recreations.  They worship the dollar, consumerism and the very same big corporations that will and are doing them in.  They think this is "left" ideology?  They are absurd.  These are the objective facts which even conservatives and those up in high places who have served in government come to understand if they are not corrupt.

I'm staying away from this site which is a total waste as there are not individuals here with either the wherewithal nor interest to engage in these issues.  There are a tiny clique of individuals who come here so it's a total and utter waste of time as nobody is interested and for the rightwing dogmatists, hate and baiting have become national sports along with football for those who are morally degenerative and intellectually lazy.  Also, there are very few people on this sit.e  Mainly one or two individuals with around 5-7 user names apiece.

In the meantime, watch your inbox.  Just received news or some horrific data about 50% of Palestinian pregnant women suffering from anemia and 30% of the children now.  Their blood and deaths are on the hands of the American people who think a few rockets fired into israel and l7 deaths over one year is a rationale for genocide and financial support of the facistic government of Israel.
