I love the new downtown Hayward. But something needs to be done to refurbish Mission Dlvd. Mission is one of the main thoroughfares into Hayward and from 580 south, Mission does a great disservice to visitors. The local stores and restaurants are rundown. We can't change the businesses, nor would I want to, but the storefronts do not look inviting. Each of the Mission Blvd business owners should drive south on Mission and see how uninviting it makes Hayward. Mission north from Carlos Bee is not much better. Foothill Blvd looks great. Come-on people, lets bring Mission Blvd into the 21st Century.

We would definitely shop at a Hayward Barnes & Noble! (Borders would be o.k., too) Even the little bookstore in San Leandro's Pelton Plaza recently closed and the Castro Valley bookstore is well stocked but is a bit too small for the avid reader.

Have you been to the Hayward Book Store on B Street? I am an avid reader and I LOVE this bookstore. Tons and Tons of used books and a lot of new ones as well. What they don't have they can order!! Help support our local small businesses, it is worth it!!

We are new to the area and I haven't visited the B Street bookstore, but now that you've told me about it, we will definitely check it out! Thanks for the tip!

I would be more than happy to have an Aaron Brothers, Trader Joes, Barnes and Nobles, and Bed Bath and Beyond closer to home for shopping. It would be especially good to have a Trader Joes near Hesperian. It also amazes me how few good locally owned restaurants there are in Hayward. We have plenty of chains, but their food is pretty boring. Downtown is looking better, but there are still plenty of empty storefronts.

As a longtime member of the Hayward community and someone who works in the downtown area, I am all for building Hayward up and making us a place where people can come to dine and shop. But in order for Hayward to move forward and actually attract retailers of this caliber as well as people from all over the Bay Area, the city is going to have to clean up the Downtown/Foothill area and get rid of the homeless, the shady individuals who live in the Green Shutter, the prostitution and drug activity that has found its way the to the downtown area. Until that is down, it is all a pipe dream.

It might be better to help the homeless than to get rid of them. However, especially in this economy, I'm at a loss as to how to do that.

I see many signs of improvement downtown. However the bottom line is there are a lot of unsavory people wandering around. I always wear pepper spray because I cannot tell you how many times I have been approached by panhandlers and scary people, in broad daylight. They especially like to bother you in the parking areas and intimidate you as you enter or leave your car. I think a lot of them ride in on BART and just hang out. This happens to me most days. I feel it isn't worth my fear or stress anymore so I am starting to travel to other cities to shop. You will not attract enough clientele to these types of high end stores in the downtown area if people feel scared or unsafe.

A another old fashion method to keeping the creep's away from you * GardenPondGal * is to whip out a 38 special and pistol whip the s**t out of them.
Then hold them at bay and call the OPD on there butt @

Well..If I did that, then the creeps would sue ME for violating THEIR rights!
I think I'll stick to the pepper spray!
By the way, the people who bother me are NOT homeless people.
They are usually young men, well dressed in fancy tennis shoes and designer jeans, jewlery etc. usually young white or black men. They seem to be under the influence. They should have some pride and get a job instead of begging and intimidating women.

I'm with you on this one. My husband and I were shopping (at Bay Center, not Hayward). After we got in the car, a young man approched on my side and the window was down. He asked for money which we did not give him. I was actually frightened. When I drive by myself, I always keep doors and windows locked but my husband, bless his heart, doesn't live by my "rules."

There were 3, able bodied, teens at Lucky the other day who were begging for change. I was having a conversation with my significant other at the time and they thought fit to harass both of us. Begging for change in $150 Jordans and Gerbrokes, what a bunch of [bleep]s! I get so mad sometimes when I see that. When the actual homeless bug me I don't get mad unless they make some snard remark about me telling them im broke.
On the same day, this happened with some guy in SF at Powell...
Homeless MAn - "Spare some change?"
Me - "Sorry man, I'm broke."
Homeless MAn - "Don't be like that."
Me - "Be like what? I'm broke!"
Homeless MAn - "..."
Me - "Now heres a concept, get a job."
Homeless MAn - "I have a job!"
Me - "Begging is not a job."
Also, giving someone a job is not the governments responsibility. You have to go out and pound the pavement. Or at least go to school to develop a marketable skill.

These must be some of the same guys that intimidated me! I get angry having to fight through these goons just to do my grocery shopping! They yell at you and escalate their intimidation if you tell them NO! Like I said, I'm scared to shop in Hayward anymore!
People will not frequent fancy new stores in downtown, or anywhere in Hayward, if they are hassled like this. They'd rather drive to Pleasanton or even Fremont to spend their money! The new stores profits will surely suffer if these bad guys aren't taken off Hayward's streets.
Just as another poster so eloquently said, "unless Hayward cleans up" ," these stores are a pipe dream." Well said.
NOTE:The guys who bother me when I shop (And I shop all over Hayward, not just downtown) DO NOT APPEAR TO BE HOMELESS PEOPLE! Most homeless people don't dress in expensive clothing and they tend to be a lot more humble. I have never been threatened by a homeless person asking for change, only by this new breed of aggressive HUSTLER!
